Groundhogs can be a huge problem. A groundhog will excavate over 500 pounds of dirt and they will often have 3 or 4 or even more dens in their territory. A groundhog den has many tunnels that lead to many chambers and this can wreak havoc on a lawn, farm, or pasture. Although groundhogs are cute to look at they can cause vast damage to your property.
What is a Groundhog?
Groundhogs are part of the marmot group and are very closely related to squirrels. They have been called many names including whistlejack, woodchuck, wejack, land beaver, and woodshaw. The name whistlepig comes from their unique call which is sort of like a sharp whistle.
Can groundhogs predict the weather? This Groundhog Day tradition came to America from Germany where it was called Candleman’s Day. The legend says that if a groundhog can see its shadow on Groundhog’s Day then there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Is it true, nope, Punxsutawney Phil has only predicted the weather correctly 40% of the time, yet the tradition lives on.
